Quarterly Investment Update – 31 December 2023

12 February 2024

NESS Super Continues to provide solid investment performance against benchmarks.

All NESS Super options had positive returns for the December with the positive share market returns reacting positively to the outlook of a reduction in inflation.

NESS MySuper option return is +4.4% for the quarter ending 31 December 2023 in which most members are invested.

What has happened this quarter

Share Markets increased to high single digits in the December quarter. Developed markets outperformed emerging markets which were weighed down by a 5% decline in Chinese stocks. Share market returns were primarily driven by inflation decelerating to the lowest rates in more than two years in the US, Europe, and UK.

Fixed income markets also reacted positively to a reduction in inflation expectations recording strong gains while unlisted property investments remain challenged due to higher discount rates and muted demand for Australian commercial property.

The MySuper accumulation option returned 4.40% in the December quarter during a period when Australian shares, Global shares, listed property, and investment bonds all had positive returns.

The MySuper accumulation returned an impressive +10.22% for the calendar year 2023. This fantastic result is driven by a 30% allocation to Australian Shares, which returned 12%, and a 30% allocation to International Shares, which returned an outstanding 22%. The remaining 40% of the portfolio provides diversification and relative downside protection during periods when equities do not perform as well.

The NESS MySuper product remains balanced and diversified to manage risk and performance in a variety of economic environments, providing our members with peace of mind for their retirement.

Near-term outlook

Although inflation is moderating, the path toward central bank targets could still be prolonged.  Recession risk appears to have moderated over the most recent time. However, high inflation, reduced consumer spending, geopolitical concerns, and an upcoming election in the U.S. introduce uncertainty into otherwise improved conditions over the quarter.
