What happened during the December 2025 quarter?
Australian shares slipped a little the December 25 quarter. This was mainly because the economic outlook has been soft and there’s talk the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) might pause rate cuts or even lift rates again in 2026.
Global (international) share markets did better. These returns were still positive overall, although they bounced around a bit after a strong run earlier in the year. With so much uncertainty especially around global politics and the world economy, many investors are taking a “wait and see” approach before making big moves.
Near-term outlook
The global economy held up better than expected, even with recent US tariff changes, which helped keep investor confidence reasonably steady. Economists now expect slightly stronger global growth in the near term, although some experts still think the full impact of tariffs hasn’t been felt yet.
Here in Australia, the RBA has cut interest rates by 0.75% since February as inflation has started to ease. That has brought the cash rate down to 3.60%. The market expects a bit more easing ahead but there’s also a chance the RBA could go the other way and lift rates if needed.
With the economy still uncertain and global tensions elevated, markets may stay a bit choppy for a while. We’ll continue to monitor conditions closely over the short to medium term.
