Cyber Action Year 2026: Protecting Yourself Online

Oct 1, 2026

This year, the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is encouraging Australians to move beyond awareness and embrace Cyber Action Year 2026. Rather than focusing on cyber security for one month, the initiative encourages individuals and organisations to make cyber security a year-round habit.

Cyber Action Year also encourages Australian organisations to adopt an “assumed breach” mindset and prepare for when, not if, a cyber incident occurs.

While businesses and government agencies work to strengthen their cyber resilience, there are also simple steps you can take to help protect your accounts and personal information every day.

Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of protection to your accounts by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password.

Enabling MFA is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your accounts. Even if a cybercriminal obtains your password, MFA makes it significantly harder for them to gain access.

Where available, we encourage you to turn on MFA for your online accounts, including banking, email, social media, and other services containing personal information.

Keep Your Devices and Applications Updated

Cybercriminals often exploit outdated software that contains known security vulnerabilities. Keeping your operating system, apps, and web browsers up to date helps protect your devices against the latest threats.

If you’ve downloaded the NESS Super app, make sure automatic updates are enabled so you can benefit from the latest security enhancements and features.

Don’t have the app yet? You can learn more and download it here.

Create Strong and Unique Passphrases

A strong passphrase is one of your best defences against cybercrime. Instead of using simple passwords, consider creating a longer passphrase made up of multiple words, numbers, and symbols that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.

Importantly, use a different passphrase for each account. This helps ensure that if one account is compromised, your other accounts remain protected.

Review your account security settings and change your password or passphrase regularly, including your NESS Super accounts via the Member Online portal – member.nesssuper.com.au.

Recognise and Report Phishing Attempts

Phishing remains one of the most common forms of cybercrime. Cybercriminals use emails, text messages, websites, and phone calls designed to appear legitimate in an attempt to steal personal or financial information.

Always be cautious if you receive unexpected communications asking you to click a link, download an attachment, or provide personal information.

Cyber Security is a Shared Responsibility

The ASD’s Cyber Action Year 2026 highlights several critical actions that organisations are encouraged to take to strengthen cyber resilience, including replacing outdated technology, choosing secure products and services, preparing for emerging technologies, and strengthening security monitoring.

While many of these actions occur behind the scenes, they reinforce an important message: cyber security works best when everyone plays their part.

By staying vigilant, maintaining strong account security, and keeping your devices up to date, you’re helping to protect not only your own information but also contributing to a safer digital environment for everyone.

Stay Secure. Stay Confident.

Cyber security is a year-round commitment. Small actions taken consistently throughout the year can make a significant difference in protecting your personal information and financial future.

Remember:

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication wherever possible.
  • Keep your devices and software updated.
  • Use strong and unique passphrases.
  • Be alert to phishing scams and suspicious communications.
  • Take action throughout the year, not just during Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Stop. Check. Report.

Cyber security starts with simple actions.
